Preparing and Finalizing Grades in Canvas Gradebook
Instructor Toolkit
Grading assignments can be time-consuming, so we strongly recommend working ahead to prepare your gradebook throughout the semester to ensure all scores and grades are updated in the Canvas gradebook before they are posted to student transcripts. When preparing your gradebook’s final grades, check that…
Your course’s Grade Scheme reflects the grading scale indicated in your syllabus.
In Canvas, the grading scheme translates numerical or percentage scores into letter grades. ASU’s default grading scale is provided with every Canvas course, but some schools or units use different schemes. (i.e. some units do not use + or – next to their letter grades). See how to manage grading schemes in gradebook.
Any graded assignments that are hidden have been posted to the gradebook.
Ensuring all assignments are posted and un-hidden allows students the opportunity to review their final grades and scores prior to grade export and posting to the Grade Roster. See how to post grades for assignments in the Gradebook
All remaining ungraded or unsubmitted assignments are assigned grades.
All submitted assignments should be given an individual score manually while empty or unsubmitted assignments can be automatically assigned null scores in bulk using the “Treat ungraded as zero” gradebook feature to turn all unsubmitted assignments to scores of 0 that are calculated into the final grade. See how to view unsubmitted assignments as 0.
