Provide constructive, meaningful, personalized, and timely (grading within 48 hours encouraged) feedback that aligns with learning objectives and assignment requirements
Feedback should be:
- Constructive. Feedback should build on what students already know, meet them where they are, and guide them toward course goals.
- Meaningful. Provide feedback that clearly explains what the student did well and what needs improvement. While copy-paste feedback can be appropriate for recurring issues, ensure that all feedback remains specific and actionable.
- Personalized. Use specific examples from the student’s work to clarify strengths and areas for growth.
- Timely. Return graded work promptly, ideally within 48 hours, so students can apply feedback to upcoming assignments.
- Aligned with clear criteria. Feedback and grades should not come as a surprise. Connect comments and scores to established standards for success to reduce confusion about expectations.
- Graded by a clear rubric. Use a rubric that defines expectations, performance levels, and point values. Canvas includes a rubric tool that supports consistent and transparent grading.
- Defined using clear instructions. Provide clear, detailed instructions so students understand expectations before submitting their work.
- Supplemented with Reminders. Post announcements that clarify common challenges or emphasize critical criteria before quizzes, exams, or major assignment deadlines.
