Accessible By Design

February is the time to improve the accessibility of presentation slides. You might share standalone slideshows with your students, or use a combination of slides and recorded video. No matter your approach, you'll find helpful resources in the Accessible By April Guided Course.

Accessible Slides

Looking for a quick, practical introduction to slide accessibility? The Characteristics of an Accessible Slide Presentation deck highlights small design choices that can make a big difference—like how slide layout, color contrast, and image use affect how students actually access your content. It's a helpful reference whether you're making minor updates to existing slides or rethinking how you present material in class or on video.

Keep an eye out for more content coming to Accessible By April soon:

  • Making Microsoft PowerPoint Presentations Accessible, Monday, Feb 9
  • Accessibility in Google Slides, Monday, Feb 16

Presentation Slides Checklist

Use this checklist as a starting point as you consider what makes your presentations accessible.

  • Structure: Use unique, descriptive titles and built-in slide layouts.
  • Readability: Use sans serif fonts (i.e., Verdana) and concise text.
  • Visuals and media: Write alt text that conveys meaning, especially for visuals used in assignments and assessments.
  • Delivery: Verbalize the content in the slides. Fully describe visuals.
